rabindranath tagore
"a man of prodigious literary and artistic accomplishments who played a leading role in the Indian cultural and national movements."
"Tagore was a Bengali poet, short-story writer, song composer, playwright, essayist, and painter who introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit.
He was highly influential in introducing Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of early 20th-century India."
Tagore visited the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus in 1912 and held lecture series at Channing-Murray Foundation's chapel.

To continue our support for Tagore, Channing-Murray hosts an Annual Tagore Festival.
"The aim of the festival is to honor the achievements of Tagore and and to bring Tagore's intellectual vision into present day intellectual conversations at the University. The events at the festival include scholarly presentations on Tagore, a keynote speech, slide shows on the life and works of the poet, and panel discussions on various facets of his vision."
